Evolução: A Journey in Capoeira's History of Revolution

Experience the history and evolution of Capoeira, an Afro-Brazilian martial art, as a revolutionary art form, from Mother Africa to Brazil to the U.S.

Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art created by African warriors who were enslaved in Brazil during colonial times. The African warriors disguised their martial arts as a dance using music and samba. Capoeira was used to preserve the lives, culture, and traditions of African peoples in Brazil and wielded to resist enslavement and later forms of anti-Black oppression. Capoeira arrived in the U.S. in the 1960s and has taken root all over the world.

Evolução takes you through an audio and visual journey of Capoeira's evolution and its impact on freedom fighting globally. Performed by The Capoeira Spot performance team of kids, teens, and adults, and with special guest performers Silva Dance Company and Mestre Omi, this show will get you on your feet and inspire you.

Following the show, we will hold a cocktail reception featuring the performers with live Samba music performed by renowned Samba musician Mestre Mariano Silva.

All ticket proceeds will go to funding the growth of our kids program, including starting a satellite school in Ward 8. As part of our fundraising efforts, we offer two VIP level sponsorship tickets:

• VIP Visionaries tickets come with front, center row seats, a half-page in the program with your name, branding, and bio, an honorable mention at the end of the show, and two drink tickets in the VIP section with drinks and hors d'oeuvres during the cocktail reception following the show
• VIP Champions tickets come with front two row seats, your name printed in the program, and one drink ticket in the VIP section of cocktail drinks and hors d'oeuvres during the reception following the show

This performance is part of our Axé Fest: Celebrating 20 Years, supported by the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities. 2023 marks 20 years since CapoeiraDC was established as a non-profit organization here in Washington, DC by Contra Mestre Morcego and Professora Borboleta, with six others. Since our founding, we have grown to serve thousands of youth, adults, and families across the District.
